Jazz Heritage Wales donates to Women's Archive of Wales

Jazz Heritage Wales has donated 9 boxes of papers to the Women's Archive of Wales, in the care of West Glamorgan Archive Service for safekeeping.

The papers give insight into the developing cultural life of Swansea and South Wales, including the set-up of Swansea Women's History group in 1980, their films covering the Miners' strike, Bridgend Munitions factory, Swansea Conscientious Objectors, Swansea Writers and Artists Group (SWAG) which campaigned for the 1995 Year of Literature and the Dylan Thomas Centre, and cultural courses run across the area by Jen Wilson.

Kim Colllis, Archivist said, “Together they provide a fascinating picture into our cultural and literary heritage over a remarkable time span. There's a lot of great stuff in there

“The Jazz Heritage Wales cultural and heritage Collection itself remains intact. These are background working papers, such as the administrative work, significant in themselves to understand developing cultural life of Swansea and Wales as it gains devolved powers, and can now be accessed via West Glamorgan Archive Service. This is part of essential preparation as the Jazz Heritage Wales Collection plans for its move from the Townhill Campus Library."

Jazz Heritage Wales is an archive is dedicated to four areas of activity: performance, archive, research and education. It was started in 1986 by jazz pianist, historian and university lecturer Professor Jen Wilson. Through her passion and enthusiasm the charity has grown into a valuable historic and educational resource chronicling the role women have played in the development of jazz music across decades. The archive has now been incorporated into UWTSD Swansea with Dame Cleo Laine as Patron.
