Paul Lawrence awarded UWTSD’s Andrew Fowkes prize during Swansea graduation ceremony

The recipient of this year’s Andrew Fowkes prize for the best use of statistics in a final year module is Paul Lawrence, a BSc Computer Networks and Cyber Security graduate.

安德鲁Fowkes博士,直到他意外死亡n 2016, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering specialising in logistics. The award that carries his name is given for the best use of statistics in an undergraduate dissertation and reflects the significance Andrew placed on appropriate and competent statistical analysis that helps to maintain the development of such an important skill set in current student research.

“I’m very honoured to have won the Andrew Fowkes Award,” says Paul, who graduated today with a first class degree. “Unfortunately, I never got to meet Andrew but have heard that he was a great and brilliant man. I’ve always loved numbers and I hope that I’ve done Andrew proud. I hope that my work would have met his very high standards and it’s great to have won this award named in his honour,” adds Paul.

Paul has made they most of his time at UWTSD taking advantage of every opportunity provided by the Faculty of Architecture, Computing and Engineering.

Last September, Paul was one of only three University students in Wales to qualify for the UK WorldSkills finals, competing against learners from all over the UK in front of over 70,000 visitors at WorldSkills UK LIVE.

Last month, Paul took part in recent round of WorldSkills regional competitions winning the gold medal in the Network Infrastructure Technician competition in Wales. He’s now waiting to hear whether he’s qualified for the WorldSkills UK LIVE competition for the second year in succession.

“I was very happy that my fellow student, George Searle and I qualified for last year’s WorldSkills UK LIVE. I struggled a bit and let the occasion get to me but that actually helped me and propelled me to become a better student. It was a humbling experience and I think since that experience, I’ve excelled…….I think that I’m now a much better Network Engineer than I was last year.

“Next, I’m thinking of doing a MSc and I also want to gain my professional qualifications. Technology is constantly changing so you need to keep reading, learning and researching. You never stop learning,” adds Paul.
