Provosts appointed to lead Campus Developments

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) has appointed Gwilym Dyfri Jones, Professor Ian Walsh and Dr Conny Matera Rogers as Provosts of its campuses.

Gwilym Dyfri Jones will take on the strategic lead of the Carmarthen and Lampeter campuses, Professor Ian Walsh will lead the Swansea campuses and Cardiff Learning Centres and Dr Conny-Matera Rogers will lead the London campus and Birmingham Learning Centre.

The Provosts will ensure that the development of the campuses have a clear sense of place in order to promote their distinctiveness as destinations of choice for students, staff and the wider community.

They will also assist in delivering the University’s civic mission by working with organisations in the local community to ensure that the University, its provision and assets are developed to support the social, cultural and economic needs of the region.

Professor Medwin Hughes, DL, Vice-Chancellor said: “I wish our Provosts well in their new roles. They each have a wealth of experience of working alongside students and staff within the University but also with external stakeholders to ensure the exploitation of the University’s expertise to create opportunities for their respective communities and the wider regions.

It will also assist in fulfilling the University’s civic role of serving the public good as a powerhouse for transformational change.University campuses play a vital role in tackling social inequalities, supporting community cohesion and promoting the economic wellbeing of their regions. The role of Provost is key to delivering the University’s mission of transforming education and transforming the lives of those we serve”.

“我t’s a huge privilege to be appointed to the role of Provost for the London Campus and Birmingham Learning Centre” said Dr Conny Matera-Rogers. “In a relatively short time, the London Campus and more recently the Birmingham Learning Centre have successfully embedded themselves into the local communities. It goes without saying that serving the public and tackling social issues present a unique challenge and take on a very different meaning in densely populated, ethnically diverse and highly competitive cities, such as London (pop 7.2 mill)and Birmingham (pop. 992.000). I am confident that the educational and community foundations we have laid will reap even greater rewards and recognition in the future.

Gwilym Dyfri琼斯还将继续在他的角色as the Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor with responsibility for Welsh language and bilingualism across the University, a role which he has fulfilled for over a decade. He was an instrumental in the University’s successful bid to attract the S4C Headquarters and the National Centre for Learning Welsh to the University. He has also contributed to the establishment of Canolfan Peniarth, Rhagoriaith – the University’s Welsh Language Services Centre, Yr Atom – the Welsh Language Centre in Carmarthen and the University’s Associate Faculty. He currently serves as a Trustee of the National Library of Wales, a Director of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and is Chair of the Governing Body of Ysgol Y Dderwen Carmarthen.

Professor Walsh will also continue in his role as the Executive Dean of the Wales Institute of Science and Arts and will lead the University’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise Services. He is also the Director of the Assistive Technologies Innovation Centre (ATiC) which is part the Accelerate project which helps innovators in Wales turn their ideas into solutions. Professor Walsh has over 25 years’ experience in the field of industrial design and academic management and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Dr Conny Matera-Rogers will also continue in her role as the Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor (International) and as UWTSD’s Authorising Officer, which is also closely linked to international recruitment. Dr Matera-Rogers began in her home country of Germany, where she was selected to join the ITT Management and Leadership development programme. Since 1976, when she arrived in the UK, Conny has spent time lecturing at Pembrokeshire College, as well as managing the Merlin Theatre and the College’s training restaurant. She has undertaken key roles in Welsh Community Development Agencies, such as Antur Teifi and Foothold Enterprises, as well as being Company Secretary for Arts Care Gofal Celf. Having completed her MBA, Conny started lecturing on a part-time basis at the University of Wales, Lampeter and very quickly became the Head of the School of Business and IT, as well as the Voluntary Services Sector Unit. Conny was awarded a Doctorate by the University of Sheffield for her research into change management in Higher Education, which is a subject she remains passionate about.
