UWTSD hosts School of Engineering Alumni Conference

School of Engineering Alumni returned to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David to share their skills, expertise and experience with students on January 21.

Dr Kerry Tudor, Lecturer in Automotive Engineering at the School of Engineering in the Faculty of Architecture, Computing and Engineering said: “The School of Engineering Alumni Conference is a great opportunity for graduates from over the last 20 years to get together and discover where their careers have taken them. We were delighted to hear from some of our cohorts and discover what their degrees have enabled them to do since their graduation. Our final year students also attended the conference and were able to to learn some valuable insights into the engineering industries that they will hope to enter after graduation in July.”

The conference was opened by Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Computing and Engineering, Professor Michael Fernando and guests were also welcomed by Roger Dowden from the University’s School of Engineering. Alumni speakers included Craig Davies from IMechE; Matt Last from Red Bull KTM Tech 3 Racing; Francesco Cavalli from Tech 3 Moto2 Racing; Sarah Chappell-Smith, Reinshaw and Harley Gasson, McLaren Automotive.

There were also talks by George Warrington, Honda R&D Europe; Chris Walkingshaw, Prodrive; Ben Buesnel, MPA Creative and Sam Myers, Ford UK; Jeremy Vick, Red Bull Racing and the Key Note Talk was delivered by Professor of Practice John Iley, Iley Design.

Professor John Iley has worked in motor sport for 27 years, the last 18 years in Formula One. With a specialisation in aerodynamics and technical management, he has been involved in programmes that have won many races, Drivers/Constructors/Team Championships in F1, Indycar, Sportscars and GT.

In recent years Professor Iley has been Head of Aero at Ferrari and McLaren before becoming Technical director at Caterham. After graduating from Coventry University, he worked on wind tunnel testing and data analysis of sports prototypes for Brun Technics.

In 1991, he was hired as aerodynamicist on the Allard J2X-C and Spice sports cars, and subsequently worked on Indycar development for Newman-Haas, Lola Cars and Swift Engineering. In 1997 John moved to Formula One with Jordan Grand Prix as a Senior Aerodynamicist, becoming Head of Aerodynamics in 1998. In 2002 he followed Mike Gascoyne to Renault F1, and then joined Ferrari in 2003 as Head of Aerodynamics.

Professor Iley joined McLaren Racing in 2010, later moving to Caterham F1 as Performance Director in 2012, inheriting the role of Technical Director in 2014. John is currently the Director and Founder of ILEY DESIGN Limited. The company has been established to bring the knowledge, strategy and technology from the extreme competition environment of the race track and apply it not just to vehicles, but also to business and its products. He also has a technical partnership with CFD experts TotalSim and works with them on a number of projects.
