UWTSD Sports Therapy students and alumni come together for networking event

Staff, students and alumni from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) Sports Therapy department recently came together for a special event to discuss lower limb injury and rehabilitation.

As the only University in Wales to provide a BSc Sports Therapy degree accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists, UWTSD’s School of Sport, Health and Outdoor Education organised the event to offer current students, recent graduates and experienced practitioners the opportunity to network and to learn from each other during what was an informative and interactive event.

After the success of the 2018 inaugural event, UWTSD’s Sports Therapy lecturers were keen to build on the success of this networking initiative and featured guest lectures from Gavin Daglish from the Ospreys RFC; Daniel Martin from the Football Association of Wales; Katy Stephens from Bouncing Back Sports Injury Clinic and Chris Jenkins of the Russian RFU. The event also offered important Continuous Professional Development (CPD) opportunities to those working in profession.

Guest speakers drew upon their professional experiences to discuss an array of clinical case studies including high ankle sprain complications, pelvic stress fractures and complex ACLR rehabilitation approaches. The event included both sporting and private clinical perspectives with delegates particularly enjoying the interactive element. Those attending were also given the opportunity to develop clinically through practice and evidence based approaches.

Katy Stephens, a clinic owner and graduate Sports Therapist, was delighted to be a part of the day and thoroughly enjoyed being able to share her journey with fellow Sports Therapists.

“It was a pleasure to talk at the university and listen to the other guest speakers,” said Katy. “Current and past students are incredibly lucky to have a free CPD event provided by the university, I wish my former University had done something similar in order to catch up with everyone whilst learning in the same day! I hope to be invited back in the future.”

There’s a lot to be said for the knowledge that can be gained from these types of events. The Alumni bring an abundance of working experience post-graduation and it is brilliant to hear them speak of their graduate journey so far. Additionally, it was so promising to see the first and second year students in attendance, preparing themselves for academic progression and being enthusiastic for what is to come.

“I cannot thank the guest speakers enough,” continues Charley Keen. “They delivered their content in a way that was very well received and the interactivity was everything a speaker could have hoped. There was plenty food for thought and I hope everyone was inspired further.”

With delegates including alumni as well as students, the event proved to be both reassuring and encouraging for those about to embark on their careers as Sports Therapists. One recent UWTSD Sports therapy graduate commented: “I found the event really beneficial as it made me realise that things don’t always go smoothly and that you will find bumps in the road and that’s OK. It also gave me a boost in remembering why I love this career!”

A current student was equally impressed, commenting: “The Alumni event was extremely helpful. The case studies offered a welcome in-depth look at the process of rehabilitation, and the obstacles that therapists face during the whole process. It was refreshing to listen to the success of Katy’s clinic, the presentation was inspirational and offered an insight into future practice. Overall the whole event was great and offered so much to me as a student; I would definitely recommend this to all students.”

With this year’s event being such a success, UWTSD’s Sports Therapy department now aims to organise an annual event bringing Sports Therapists – students, graduates and experienced professionals – together to share ideas and discuss best practice. The event also offers a great opportunity for delegates to network, to inspire and to discuss contemporary approaches to injury assessment, diagnosis and management.
