Former Childhood, Youth and Education Studies student appointed lecturer at UWTSD

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) is delighted to announce that former student, Lianne Bowen, has been appointed to a Lectureship in Inclusive Education at the University.

Since her appointment Lianne has been providing a range of face-to-face online lectures to several groups of ‘Inclusive Education’ students. Lianne teaches on a range of modules which include topics such as Additional Learning Needs, Classroom Behaviour and Interventions and Principles of Learning and Teaching. She is also studying a PhD at the University which focuses on children’s wellbeing.

For many years Lianne, who lives in the village of Pontyberem, worked in retail and the social care sector. However, she decided to follow her dream and return to the world of education to further her career. Lianne Bowen said:

“I enrolled on the Foundation Degree in Inclusive Studies for Teaching Assistants at UWTSD in the summer of 2013. I was a first-generation university student and attended university as a mature student at weekends for both my undergraduate and then my postgraduate degree. I continued to work as a full time Learning Support Assistant throughout my studies, as well as gaining other relevant qualifications.

I acknowledge and give credit to my family as well as the staff at UWTSD who have supported and offered me mentorship along this journey. My role as a lecturer for UWTSD has given me the opportunity to give something back to the University."

Cindy Hunt the Programme Director for Inclusive Education degree, commented:

“Lianne has had an unconventional start due to the COVID situation but hit the ground running and is now an integral part of the team. She has developed online lectures which students have engaged well with and she has developed a range of new online teaching resources.

“我们很高兴丽芬妮已经加入我们的团队,especially as she was a past Inclusive Education graduate herself. In fact, this is a real success story and Lianne’s story demonstrates how you can progress within an Inclusive Education degree.

Lianne was an undergraduate on the Foundation Degree in Inclusive Studies for Teaching Assistants in 2013 and gained her Foundation degree with a distinction in June 2016. She then gained the BA (Hons) in Inclusive Education with a First-Class Honours in June 2017 and then in June 2019 gained a Master of Arts in Equity and Diversity in Society and is now currently studying for a PhD.

Lianne is a fantastic role model for the students she teaches and will also be able to empathise with their own learning journey. Most students on the Inclusive Education route are Learning Support Assistants and Teaching Assistants therefore, Lianne has a detailed knowledge of their work role and the strategies for balancing employment and study. The Centre for Childhood, Youth and Education Studies also benefit a great deal from Lianne’s direct knowledge of the primary education sector.”

Despite starting her lecturing role during the Covid-19 pandemic, Leanne and the team have embraced the very latest online teaching technology. Shed added:

“I have been able to develop and deliver lectures and tutorials throughout using UWTSD online teaching technology. I have also developed many new skills that will support my role at UWTSD. As a past student it has been so exciting to join the team and use my own experiences as a student and in the education sector to support current students. Many of the students that I teach are mature students, who bring a wealth of experience and knowledge. I really want to reach out to other non-traditional students who feel they cannot achieve successful careers.”
