Peniarth collaboration on new app for S4C

Cyw and friends are firm favourites of children and their parents across Wales and now they can join them at any time of the day thanks to a new app from S4C.

The app commissioned by the channel and launched in April is the work of Canolfan Peniarth, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David's digital and print publisher, and Tinint, Tinopolis' digital agency.

By combining content similar to Cyw's previous apps, the new app will make life easier by offering everything in one place.

The app gives children the opportunity to be creative as well as to learn in a happy and magical world by helping Cyw to complete words at the fair, go for a ride on the spelling train, compose music or count on the farm.

S4C's Commissioner for Children's Content and Education, Sioned Wyn Roberts, is confident the app will be of interest to parents who use Ysgol Cyw (Cyw school).

"Ysgol Cyw is a package of educational programmes for young children launched in response to school closures.

"The pack includes S4C Cyw and Stwnsh programmes as well as digital material and apps to help parents who have young children at home and are looking for quality material to entertain as well as educate them.

"Since the lockdown, there has been a significant increase in Cyw's popularity across all of our platforms.

Rhodri ap Dyfrig, S4C's Online Content Commissioner, said: "We have been working on Antur Cyw with TinInt and Canolfan Peniarth since before Christmas, and as Cyw's viewing figures have exploded in the last month, the launch is very timely.

"Our average number of viewers of children's TV is up 182%. Online viewing is increasing too, with Cyw seeing viewing hours up by 59% on S4C Clic and an increase of 36% on iPlayer."

With Cyw YouTube sessions up 23% in March, compared to February, it's very clear that more and more people are turning to Cyw.

Gwydion Wynne, Canolfan Peniarth Director at UWTSD is confident that the app will bring Cyw’s world alive to children. He said: “The development of the new Antur Cyw app with S4C and Tinint digital company, Llanelli, has been a huge success. The educational content is naturally woven into the world of Cyw in a fun and relaxed way. The Antur Cyw app will develop over the coming months to include more stimulating educational games to support children in educational establishments and at home.”

Antur Cyw is available on iOS, Android and on Amazon and like all other S4C content it's available for free.

Five-year-old Megan Alaw from Carmarthen was amongst the first to use the app.

"My favourite thing about Antur Cyw is making words on Jangl the giraffe's train by guessing the missing letters.

"I've got them all right so far, but it gets harder every time so I want to keep playing. I'm going to tell all my friends about it when I'm back at school."
