Physical Education Graduate Returns to give talk to Current Students

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David was delighted to welcome back Physical Education graduate Tom Davies to the Carmarthen campus recently to talk to current PE students about his progress from the degree and into his role as Primary School Teacher.

Tom graduated from the BA (Hons) Physical Education programme in 2014 and later also studied his PGCE at the University following a year of working as a teaching assistant. The visit was highly valued by staff and students at the University of Wales Trinity Saint.

Programme manager for the BA (Hons) Physical Education degree and Academic Director for the Institute of Management & Health Dylan Blain stated:

“We are all extremely grateful to Tom for giving up some of his half term to share his experiences with our current student groups. It’s great for them to hear some first-hand advice and tips from a graduate of the programme so that they can best plan for their futures. I know that many of the group valued the insights given. It was also great to hear from Tom how much of the work he studied during his time on the BA Physical Education programme has been of value as he has taken such leading roles within the subject at the Primary schools he has worked at."

Current student, Dafydd Jones said “I’m looking to progress into a career in primary school teaching, so it was great to hear some first-hand tips from Tom who has already progressed from the PE degree into a teaching post."

The ideas and concepts I learned during the course have continued to be useful throughout my teaching. For example, I learned about innovative ways of providing all pupils with a holistic sporting experience in school PE through the use of a teaching model called Sport Education. I’ve really enjoyed using this approach and can see the benefits it provides the pupils I have taught in developing their confidence and enjoyment of sport."

In a follow up to Tom’s visit to UWTSD, BA Physical Education Programme Manager Dylan Blain undertook a return visit to St Oswald’s VC School, Jeffreyston to work with Tom and his pupils on a Rugby World Cup theme they had been undertaking. Dylan added, “it was great to be able to support Tom & the pupils at St Oswald’s with their PE lessons. The enthusiasm and enjoyment of the pupils was clear to see in the lessons. It’s particularly satisfying to see the content we deliver to our students as part of the Physical Education degree being delivered in local schools. I’m looking forward to seeing this work develop in the future.”
