Open to the public and run under the supervision of the University’s highly experienced lecturers and clinicians, the free student-led injury clinics operate every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons between 3pm and 5pm. The clinics are open to any member of the public suffering from sports and exercise related musculoskeletal injuries.

The BSc Sports Therapy degree at UWTSD is the only Sports Therapy degree in Wales accredited by theSociety of Sports Therapyand is designed to develop competent practitioners in all aspects of Sports Therapy. As part of their degree, students will undertake supervised clinical practice at the University’s clinic offering appointments to staff, students and members of the public.

Upon graduation, UWTSD’s Sports Therapy students are suitably skilled and insured through The Society of Sports Therapists to run their own private clinics - which for some has included use the facilities on site - as well as working in a variety of other sporting and healthcare environments.

“Our students get the opportunity to cement the taught components of their modules in a practical environment under the supervision of experienced clinicians,” says Daniel Martin, Sports Therapy lecturer. “This experience then forms part of their professional development and continues the journey towards becoming a fully autonomous Graduate Sports Therapist.”

One of those students who’s already been treating patients at the University’s clinic is Graham Vaughan,

“I find that clinic has helped me in learning about client acquisition, correspondence and booking of appointments. This further allows time to practice greeting and consultation skills, whilst building relationship with the patients,” says Graham. “I have familiarised myself with techniques through the modules and am able to apply them, with the goal of becoming a Graduate Sports Therapist. I feel confident to learn clinical reasoning skills in the expertly supervised environment and to produce safe effective treatments.”

A Graduate Sports Therapist is someone who is competent and capable of dealing with acute injuries pitchside, performing a clinical assessment to develop a diagnosis, and who uses a variety of treatment methods, alongside sport-specific rehabilitation techniques, to get the athlete back to full sports participation. Students learn in UWTSD’s dedicated sport therapy suites and upon graduating have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to work as part of a team or independently as a Graduate Sports Therapist.
