Student teachers from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) are helping families across Wales who are currently home-schooling their children by creating a range of online resources.

Students on the PGCE (Post-graduate Certificate of Education) and BA Primary Education QTS courses at UWTSD have been utilising their experience of teaching and transforming their resources into creative and innovative online opportunities that will engage children and young people.
The resources are being collated and uploaded to the University’s Athrofa Pinterest board which gives easy access to all:

“Our wonderful student-teachers have overcome the disappointment of not being in school by putting their efforts into creating high quality on-line resources showing resilience in action,” says Elaine Sharpling, Academic Director of Teacher Education at UWTSD’s Athrofa: Institute of Education.
“The Athrofa family is so proud of our student-teachers who have stepped up to the civic mission by creating some wonderful resources to support home-schooling. Our students have shown that they are creative, innovative and inspiring, rallying round to support home schooling by designing on-line resources,” adds Elaine.
Nia普林格尔斯图是第三年dent studying on the BA Primary Education with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) at UWTSD’s Carmarthen campus and was determined to use her skills to help the community:
“At a time like this it is important that everyone pulls together by reaching out to parents, teachers and children,” says Nia Pringle, who’s studying through the medium of Welsh.
“As I am in my final year of a BA Primary Education degree with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status), finishing my course online, I understand the challenge teachers and parents face in teaching from home. I was keen to offer any possible support, so I decided to read the story ‘Hugless Douglas' in both English and Welsh to support teachers and parents who are working hard during this difficult time. I believe that putting an emphasis on hearing the language and reading is crucial at this stage in order to continue to motivate the children and develop their language skills. I hope that reading the story in both languages will help non-Welsh speaking parents understand the content of the story and possibly ask questions to test their children's understanding. The children could then draw the main character or create a storyboard of the events,” adds Nia.
Yr Athrofa at UWTSD is a stimulating and enquiring Institute of Education with values rooted in justice, equity, democracy, human rights, citizenship and encouraging high aspirations for all. Its aim is to enable student teachers to develop into skilled creative and employable graduates who will contribute to society and be responsible citizens of the world – an aim which is certainly being realised with students now coming together to support families in such an enthusiastic and creative way.
