UWTSD hosts IEAN conference in Wales

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) will welcome The Minister for Education, Jeremy Miles MS to a major international education conference being hosted by the University’sYr Athrofa: Centre for Educationon October 20 and 21.

The two-day online International Educational Assessment Network (IEAN) Conference is being held virtually in Wales for the first time and will involve contributions from academics and policymakers from across the world.

Among the countries being represented are Wales, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Australia, Singapore, and Scotland.

The conference will examine and explore the opportunities and challenges presented by the new Curriculum for Wales drawing on the expertise of a number of speakers including Professor Graham Donaldson, Dr Sonny Singh, Professor Louise Hayward, and Professor Anne Looney.

Schools from the Athrofa: Professional Learning Partnership (APLP), UWTSD’s thriving Initial Teacher Education partnership, will also present alongside the Minister and other international delegates.

The conference, last held in Ireland in 2019, was delayed a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic and has been scheduled to take place online so as to maintain momentum in relation to some of the key educational developments and debates currently ongoing across the globe.

Yr Athrofa is the Centre for education at UWTSD. It brings together Initial Teacher Education programmes and other professional qualifications for educators in all sectors of the education system; career-long professional learning opportunities and programmes, designed using research and close collaboration with partner schools; education research expertise, projects, and expertise; and the Centre for Education Policy Review and Analysis (CEPRA).

Group discussions and workshops will take place during the Conference which will also feature a presentation from representatives from the University’s Schools’ partnership.

Professor Dylan Jones, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at UWTSD will open the conference, delivering a talk entitled, ‘The Education journey in Wales; Realising Reform’ and UWTSD Vice Chancellor Professor Medwin Hughes will share the work of the university and its mission – ‘Transforming Education. Transforming Lives.’

IEANbrings together international research and policy experts from small nations and states to share evidence from research and practice, to generate new ideas and to tackle long terms problems in educational assessment. The network provides an open, safe, and collaborative space in which new thinking is driven by four areas of challenge: sustainable assessment systems, assessment for enhancing learning, the use of assessment information and assessment futures. The work of the network is currently focussed upon assessment and learning progression, the use of assessment data, assessment cultures and Covid-19.
