妈tthew Bellis is a KESS II (Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarship 2) PhD student at Swansea College of Art, University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
妈tthew is currently undertaking a PhD in design in collaboration with Hywel Dda University Health Board, looking at the issues surrounding respiratory masks in the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea / Hypopnoea Syndrome (OSAHS).
The focus of the work is to utilise low-cost 3D scanning and printing technologies to increase conformity of the mask to the face, with the intention of improving comfort, performance and overall patient compliance with treatment.
Previous work for his Masters final project involved developing an assistive exoskeleton arm for people with Muscular Dystrophy using 3D printing and scanning technologies. The process involved 3D scanning the patients arm to create a 3D digital representation, this data was imported into a 3D CAD modelling software to build around which could then be 3D printed. The exoskeleton arm was motorised which enabled the person to move their arm via a joystick in the opposing hand, giving them an improved freedom that they otherwise would not have.
The idea is to implement some of the findings from his Masters into his current work to improve the performance of respiratory masks in the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
