Collaboration between Shwmae Sir Gâr and Coleg Sir Gâr

Canolfan S4C Yr Egin has recently been collaborating with Coleg Sir Gâr to provide opportunities for its students who are studying the creative industries.
Coleg Sir Gâr students recently set about pitching creative ideas to Shwmae Sir Gâr's production team, namely Yr Egin and Carlam, and the winners' idea will be filmed and shared on the platform.
During a visit at the beginning of term Carys Ifan, Director of Yr Egin, set a challenge for the students to develop an idea for the Shwmae Sir Gâr platform. Shwmae Sir Gâr is a digital channel forming part of the S4C Lleol (S4C Local) pilot. The content can be found on social media, and it is a platform for the county's residents to have their say, share their stories and hopes, as well as reflect the history and living culture of localities within the county. One of the project’s aims is also to create opportunities to develop new talent, whether in front of or behind the camera.
The aim of the challenge was to offer the students experience of the world of work, with the best candidates having the opportunity to sell their ideas in front of a panel similar to the popular 'Dragons’ Den' programme. The winning students will work with a professional crew to see the idea come to fruition from paper to screen.

Claire Mackerras from Coleg Sir Gâr said: "The collaboration has been a great opportunity for our students for their induction projects. It has enabled all students studying the creative industries to benefit from the workshops provided by Yr Egin, and to gain confidence and skills in preparing for an opportunity to work with industry workers while presenting their ideas to Carys, Euros and the team. We are extremely proud to be nurturing, developing and finding new talent amongst our students, and are grateful to Yr Egin for providing our students with experiences of the industry."
Four groups were shortlisted, and were invited to Yr Egin to present their ideas to the panel. This was a great opportunity for the students to be able to present their ideas, answer questions from industry panel members and have real experience of pitching. According to the panel, all of the ideas were good and would work well on the Shwmae Sir Gâr platform.
Euros Llŷr Morgan said, "It's been an absolutely fantastic experience to work with Coleg Sir Gâr students – an experience that has enabled us to emphasise what West Wales has to offer in relation to the creative industry. I look forward to working with the students over the coming weeks as we continue to develop the skills and ideas of future film producers."
After much deliberation, Talia Jones and Erin Ibbotson’s idea was chosen as the winning one. This idea entailed following Angharad who provides yoga and aerial movement workshops in the Carmarthenshire area. Talia and Erin had come up with the idea as they noticed that Angharad had continued to inspire the community with her online sessions during lockdown and had ensured that the community continued to keep healthy. The panel said that the idea showed evidence of research in terms of the platform's target audience and mission. The Shwmae Sir Gâr crew have already been filming the item in the company of the students, and they are looking forward to working with the students to edit it. The item will be available to watch onShwmae Sir Gârshortly.
Carys Ifan, Director of Yr Egin, added: "In a rural area it is sometimes more difficult to see progression routes than in a city, particularly for new talent. Therefore through Yr Egin’s collaboration with the students I am sure that they now have a better understanding of the opportunities available to them here after college and what kind of experience it is to create content for a client. Developing world of work skills is so important and I thank all the students for taking the plunge and for their exciting ideas. “It is great that a platform such as Shwmae Sir Gâr is available to develop talent to create Welsh-medium content.”
