的University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) has a highly successfulDegree Apprenticeship programme, working in partnership with Welsh businesses to create a pipeline of talent and equipping future workforces with the right skills to ensure Wales remains competitive on a global scale.
的programmes provide employers with high quality, sector specific training to upskill their current workforce. For individuals, they provide an alternative gateway into higher education which is fully funded, enabling them to earn whilst they are learning invaluable higher-level practical skills to help maximise career progression opportunities.
Joshua Thorngateis studying the BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering course at UWTSD. He said: “I have recently been promoted from an Assistant Engineer to a Mechanical Design Engineer at Sony UK Technology Centre. My responsibilities have increased since gaining the promotion, whereby I now have the opportunity to manage my own equipment design engineering projects. This involves designing and developing special-purpose machinery for manufacturing.
“The course at UWTSD has helped me gain an abundance of engineering knowledge which has aided not only my designs but also the processes I utilise for these designs, enabling them to be more efficient.
“I believe the course at UWTSD will continue to increase my advanced engineering knowledge which I can continue to apply at work and aid in my investigation of new technologies and ways to improve the engineering and manufacturing industry.”
Joshua Harries, who works at Digital Health and Care Wales, has been promoted to a Band 4 Service Desk Officer. He said: “The university has been so supportive of me, offering help and advice where needed. I truly cannot wait to see what the future holds for me in DHCW and UWTSD as I further progress my career in Cyber Security / Computing and in my degree.”
Peter Holdstockis a newly appointed Service Desk Apprentice at Digital Health and Care Wales. He said: “With this new promotion I will be spending more time as a first point of contact for our primary care department. I am also more involved with providing first line support to our customers all across Wales. These can include Pharmacists, GP’s, Health board users, Community Health Councils and Public Health Wales users. This is going to help in my progression because I am able to gain more experience of the services we provide as well as the process we have to follow.
“The degree course at UWTSD has enabled me to gain more of a deeper understanding into the security side of the business which in the future will allow me to progress to the specialist teams within Digital Health and Care Wales.”
Bryoni Keighley, a Digital Degree Apprentice in the Publishing Team at Digital Health and Care Wales has been promoted to an Information Analyst in the new ‘Power BI’ Team within Information Services.
She said: “I applied for the internal role via an online application and out of 31 applicants I was one of the top 4 chosen to interview. I was interviewed a week later and offered the job the next day. This role is very much based around Data Analysis & Visualisation and requires skills in SQL and Power BI. My Data Science course has allowed me to develop these specific skills and without being on this course I would not have had what was required for this role.

Everything I’m learning I’m able to apply in the workplace, and it is also giving me valuable experience that I was able to refer back to during interview questions – providing me with all the answers needed to showcase my skills.
“Every module I’ve completed so far at UWTSD played a part in helping me get this new role. From Academic and Employability skills helping in my interview prep, to Data Analysis and Visualisation giving me the knowledge needed for this role, and everything in-between; experience working in a team, working under pressure, and solving problems. All these skills employers are looking for.”
Carys Newing is a Cyber Security Analyst, working in Integrated Technology Services at Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water.She said: “When I started my studies at UWTSD I was an apprentice, I have now been promoted to a Cyber Security Analyst.
“With the course building my confidence I am now more comfortable to challenge why things are performed in a certain way and have gained a better understanding of the teams we work with and our networks from doing so.
“I know I have come a long way since joining Welsh Water as an apprentice and I am going to continue giving them my all whilst doing my degree. I strive every day to be an asset to the team I am in and doing this course will not only boost my knowledge but my confidence and is allowing me to network with other apprentices in the degree programme.”
Ben Powellstarted with Dwr Cymru Welsh Water nearly 3 years ago as an apprentice. He said: “Like many 18-year-old school leavers I was unsure of my next steps and decided an apprenticeship was right for me. After successfully completing the apprenticeship, I was given the opportunity to study for a degree with UWTSD as a degree apprentice, which I practically jumped at!
“I can say I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student. I have been able to apply what I have learned in my day-to-day role, as well to build confidence in my abilities. UWTSD has also given me the opportunity to meet a wide variety of people which I have loved.
“Shortly after undertaking the degree I was given the opportunity to progress from my role as a Cyber Security Apprentice to a Cyber Security Analyst, with my time with UWTSD playing an instrumental part of securing the promotion. As a result, my responsibilities have significantly increased and I am continuously being introduced to new things and concept, which is incredibly exciting. I hope to continue to improve over my time with UWTSD and look forward to any future challenges!”
Patrick Atkinson: “我目前在第三年的软件gineering course. The technical knowledge and practices taught to me have been very beneficial in my employment. I have also honed other non-industry specific skills, such as report writing, team working, and presentation skills. I have recently progressed to a more senior role within the Development Team at UWTSD. I believe a large reason for this was due to the skills learnt during the time on the course, which allowed me to effectively demonstrate the knowledge needed to meet the requirements of the post.”
Paul Richards: “The digital apprenticeship has expanded my overall IT knowledge. It has help provide me with new skills which has helped develop my career path at Dyfed Powys Police. Recently I have applied these skills in helping me obtain a promotion in work, and I am sure these skill will help me progress further in my career.”
Bridget Moseley, head of UWTSD’s Apprenticeship Unitsaid: “I am incredibly proud to be supporting these people through the Degree Apprenticeship programme; their hard work and commitment to their employers, studies and skills development shines through and is being recognised by their employers through the promotion opportunities and appointments that they are securing. Well done, all of you!”
的Degree Apprenticeships at UWTSD, which are fully funded by the Welsh Government, normally run over 4 years with off the job training taking place on a day release basis at the University’s Swansea campus. Those with prior learning and / or experience may be able to complete the programme in less time.
Apprentices are supported throughout their programme by a Liaison Officer who visits their workplace regularly, providing the link between the academic studies and workplace learning.
