的first cohort of Degree Apprentices have graduated from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD).

UWTSD has a highly successful Degree Apprenticeship Programme, working in partnership with Welsh businesses to create a pipeline of talent and equipping future workforces with the right skills to ensure Wales remains competitive on a global scale.

的programmes provide employers with high quality, sector specific training to upskill their current workforce. For individuals, they provide an alternative gateway into higher education which is fully funded, enabling them to earn whilst they are learning invaluable higher-level practical skills to help maximise career progression opportunities.

Lois Harris is a technical buyer at Bisley (FC Brown Steel Equipment Ltd.) based in Newport, and she has just completed her BEng Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Degree, which she studied part-time.

She said: “I’m proud of what I have achieved in completing the course and am very happy with my results. The degree apprenticeship programme provided the best opportunities to apply what I’d learnt at work. Also, it’s what I found most interesting! I hope this qualification allows me to progress further in my career and develop my knowledge within the industry.

“The university offered good facilities within the school of engineering. It was also one of the few universities which offered the course on a part-time basis and as a degree apprenticeship which was beneficial for my employer.

“I enjoyed the course, and the work was both interesting and relevant to my work. The tuition and support were great – staff made an extra effort to be available and answer any queries outside of study time, which was really helpful (particularly when studying part time. I would certainly recommend the course to others.

Cameron Davies is a Castings Tooling Apprentice at Wall Colmonoy. He studied for a BEng Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering degree at UWTSD and is planning to stay on to complete his Master’s.

He said: “It feels like a very proud achievement to have graduated. As an apprentice in Wall Colmonoy I was asked to do this course, with the aim and ambition being, to both learn and expand my knowledge in the subject

“I enjoyed doing my major project, which gave me good opportunity to work with staff members who had good experience in the sector I am working in. Completing a degree apprenticeship programme has given me greater knowledge in a subject I feel will be very useful for me in the future. I will officially finish my apprenticeship in September, and I hope to continue learning and progressing as an engineer, and hope that in the near future I will go on to complete my Masters.”

Bridget Moseley, head of UWTSD’s Apprenticeship Unitsaid: “I am incredibly proud to have supported this first cohort through the Degree Apprenticeship programme. Their hard work and commitment to their employers, studies and skills development has shone through. Well done, all of you!”

的Degree Apprenticeships at UWTSD, which are fully funded by the Welsh Government, normally run over 4 years with off the job training taking place on a day release basis at the University’s Swansea campus. Those with prior learning and / or experience may be able to complete the programme in less time.

Apprentices are supported throughout their programme by a Liaison Officer who visits their workplace regularly, providing the link between the academic studies and workplace learning.
