Working with Data
如果你开始一个new research project, then you will need to consider issues relating to the management of research data. Many of these issues will be relevant whether or not the research is funded by an external sponsor.
Using a checklist and/or writing a data management plan is an essential first step to take at the pre-project stage. You can then continuously refer to it throughout the project.
A useful starting point is the DCC (Digital Curation Centre)Checklist for a Data Management Plan. It presents the main themes and questions that researchers may want to cover when writing a data management plan. This checklist covers issues such as:
- Data Collection:What Data will you collect or create? How will the data be collected or created?
- Documentation and Metadata:What documentation and metadata will accompany the data?
- Ethics and Legal Compliance:How will you manage any ethical issues? How will you manage copyright and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) issues
- Storage and Backup:How will the data be stored and backed up during the research? How will you manage access and security?
- Selection and Preservation:What data should be retained, shared and / or preserved? What is the long-term preservation plan for the dataset?
- Data Sharing:How will you share your data? Are any restrictions on data sharing required?
- Responsibilities and Resources:Who will be responsible for data management What resources will you require to deliver your plan?
